Entry is decided by the West Midlands Grammar Schools entrance test, sat through the Shropshire, Walsall and Wolverhampton consortium, together with the school's priority for looked-after and Pupil Premium girls.
Assessment Components
The test, provided by GL Assessment, is two multiple-choice papers of about 50 to 60 minutes each, with timed sections in English comprehension and the three areas below, and no writing:
- Verbal Reasoning: Tests logical thinking skills, vocabulary knowledge, and the ability to understand and manipulate language concepts
- Non-Verbal Reasoning: Assesses spatial awareness, pattern recognition, and the ability to identify relationships between shapes and symbols
- Mathematics: Evaluates numerical competency, problem-solving abilities, and mathematical reasoning skills
Each section is standardised for age, and the sections are weighted 50% English and verbal reasoning, 25% non-verbal reasoning and 25% mathematics.
What the results letter means and how places are offered
The October results letter gives a girl's test performance together with the qualifying score, so families know before the application closing date whether she is in contention. Looked-after girls and the 25 highest-scoring Pupil Premium girls at or above the qualifying score are placed first, and every remaining place goes in strict order of merit, with no catchment area.
The school must be named on the home local authority's application by the home council's closing date, normally 31 October and later when that date falls at a weekend, since sitting the test alone brings no offer, and the local authority sends offers on national offer day in March. Girls whose score is within 2% of the lowest automatic place form the waiting list, which is reordered under the oversubscription criteria as names join or leave and runs to the end of the autumn term.
A refused place can be appealed to an independent panel. The intention to appeal is given to the school in writing by the date it sets, and the forms and hearing details follow.
