Adults preparing for IELTS are usually working to a fixed date, whether for a university offer, professional registration with a body such as the NMC or GMC, or a UK visa application. Band score often turns on exam technique and timing as much as general English ability, with marks commonly lost on task response, structure and pacing under exam conditions. Preparation that targets the weakest of the four papers under timed conditions works on exactly where those marks are being lost.

Which format matters as much as the score itself: universities and most professional bodies ask for IELTS Academic, while immigration routes and some professional registrations accept IELTS General Training, and the Home Office specifies IELTS for UKVI, a separately administered version of the same test, for visa applications. Enquiries receive tutor recommendations, with a free initial consultation to confirm the right paper, current level and starting point before any paid session is booked.

Academic and General Training

IELTS is offered in two formats that share the same listening and speaking papers but diverge on reading and writing. Academic reading uses texts drawn from academic journals, textbooks and newspapers aimed at graduate readers, with the writing task requiring an essay responding to an argument or problem; universities, postgraduate courses and most professional registration bodies specify this version. General Training reading and writing use material closer to everyday and workplace English, such as notices, advertisements and a letter-writing task, and is the version most immigration authorities and some vocational bodies ask for.

The four papers and how bands are scored

The test has four papers: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking, each scored on the nine-band scale from non-user to expert user. Listening and Reading are marked from a raw score against a conversion table that varies slightly between test versions, while Writing and Speaking are assessed by an examiner against four criteria each; for writing, task response, coherence and cohesion, lexical resource and grammatical range and accuracy, and for speaking, fluency, lexical resource, grammatical range and pronunciation. The overall band is the average of the four paper scores, rounded to the nearest whole or half band.

Finding the weakest skill

A full practice test under timed conditions, sat before any teaching begins, shows which of the four papers sits furthest from the target band and why: reading pace against a strict time limit, missed detail in listening, a writing task that runs out of structure, or hesitation and limited range in speaking. Writing and speaking scripts are marked against the same band descriptors examiners use in the live exam, so the gap between current performance and the required score is measured on the same terms as the test itself.

What a preparation programme covers

From that starting point, sessions work through timed papers to build pacing and exam stamina alongside the technique each paper rewards: prediction and note-taking for listening, skimming and scanning for reading, paragraph structure and paraphrasing for writing, and structured, extended answers for speaking. Written and spoken practice is returned with feedback set against the band criteria, covering either Academic or General Training tasks depending on the candidate's target. Tutors are tiered by qualifications and teaching experience, which sets the fee for a given tutor, with sessions priced from £50 for a 50-minute lesson depending on tutor level and subject.

IELTS for UKVI and the OET alternative

IELTS for UKVI covers the same test content and scoring as the standard Academic or General Training version but is administered only through centres approved to issue results for UK visa and immigration purposes, and is the version specified for most work, study and settlement visa categories. For healthcare professionals registering with a body such as the NMC, GMC or GDC, the Occupational English Test offers an alternative accepted by most UK regulators, using healthcare scenarios and vocabulary in place of the general topics set in IELTS.

Online and central London sessions

Preparation is delivered one-to-one or in small groups, online by default so sessions fit around work and travel, with in-person tuition available in central London for candidates who prefer to meet in person. English for adults is taught at every level from beginner to proficient, online or in person in central London, which allows exam preparation to sit alongside broader language work for candidates who need both.

Employer-funded preparation

Employers sponsoring staff through professional registration, relocation or visa applications can book IELTS preparation for those staff and are invoiced directly by Taylor Tuition. There is no registration fee and the initial consultation is free, with enquiries receiving tutor recommendations. Every placement begins with an introductory session with the matched tutor, and staff are re-matched at no extra cost if the fit is wrong, which matters when a programme covers several employees at once.

Frequently asked questions

How does invoicing work for employer-funded IELTS preparation?
Taylor Tuition invoices the employer directly when a programme is booked for staff, with no registration fee and a free initial consultation to confirm requirements before any session is arranged. Session fees start from £50 for a 50-minute lesson and depend on tutor level and subject, set out before booking begins.
How are staff levels assessed before sessions start?
Every placement begins with an introductory session with the matched tutor, during which current level and the target IELTS format are confirmed, often using a timed practice paper to identify the weakest of the four skills. If the match is not right, Taylor Tuition re-matches the tutor at no extra cost, which is useful when staff are being assessed at different levels within one programme.
What's the difference between IELTS Academic and General Training, and which one is required?
Academic tests reading and writing against material and tasks aimed at graduate-level study, and is the version universities and most professional registration bodies ask for. General Training uses everyday and workplace English and is typically required for immigration routes and some vocational registrations. Listening and speaking are the same in both, so the choice usually comes down to what the receiving organisation specifies.
Is standard IELTS or IELTS for UKVI required?
IELTS for UKVI covers identical content and scoring to standard IELTS, Academic or General Training, but is taken at a centre approved for UK visa and immigration purposes and is specified for most work, study and settlement visa categories. Standard IELTS is accepted by universities, employers and professional bodies that do not require the UKVI version, so the right choice depends on which organisation is asking for the result and what they specify on their entry requirements.
How soon can tuition start, and what happens in the first session?
Enquiries receive tutor recommendations, and the initial consultation is free with no registration fee, so a suitable tutor can normally be confirmed quickly. The first session is an introduction with the matched tutor, covering current level, the target format and band, and a practice task to identify where preparation should start; if the match is not right, Taylor Tuition arranges a different tutor at no extra cost.
